What is being done to help them?

Sampling in the Stuart System

As explained above, biologists will be continuing to attempt to capture sturgeon in the Stuart system, the largest tributary to the Nechako River . Sampling is done by capturing sturgeon and measuring them to assess their:

  • Age
  • Growth
  • Physical health
  • State of sexual maturity
  • Genetics

By monitoring these characteristics, researchers hope to find out the following about white sturgeon in the Stuart:

  • Their relationship and linkage to the known Nechako River mainstem population.
  • If there are juvenile fish present and spawning occurring in the Stuart.
  • Basic information about the biology and population of white sturgeon in the Stuart system.
