Sampling
for Juvenile Sturgeon in the Nechako River
In
2004, researchers will be conducting a relatively intensive
sampling program in the Nechako to determine the presence
and distribution of juvenile sturgeon (7 years old and less)
and the habitat used by these fish. We already know there
are few. These fish will be tagged and sampled. This study
will also serve as a “baseline” or starting point for what
will have to be a regular program in the future. When actions
are taken to attempt recruit juvenile fish into the population,
a sampling program of this nature will tell us over the long-term
if we are succeeding (i.e. if the number of juvenile sturgeon
in the population is increasing.)
