Egg and Larval Sampling in the Spring

From previous visual observations, public reports and tracking of radio tagged fish, researchers had become aware of an apparent annual “gathering” of sturgeon near Vanderhoof. Because of the timing of this event, it was suspected to be related to spawning activity. In the spring of 2004, researchers monitored the tagged fish in the Nechako with overview flights and observed a movement of several fish to the expected area. Visual observations indicated up to 30 or more adult sturgeon were present and spawning activity was observed. Researchers deployed equipment to collect sturgeon eggs and larvae a short distance downstream of this area. Several sturgeon eggs and a sturgeon larva were subsequently captured.

This information has provided the Recovery Initiative researchers with much needed information. We now know that spawing can occur successful.
